Your time in Madrid is the perfect balance of guided sightseeing and time to explore on your own. Spend time at the Prado Museum, the Royal Palace, the Plaza Espaa and more. You'll also enjoy an included excursion to the town of Toledo to see the Gothic Cathedral and the church of Santo Tome, home of one of El Greco's most famous paintings. A special highlight is boarding the exciting AVE high-speed train to Seville to explore the sights and architecture of this former Roman city. You can add three days in Barcelona to this vacation.


Day 1: International Flight to Madrid

Day 2: Arrival in Madrid, Spain

Time to rest or to start exploring the Spanish capital. At 6 p.m. meet your traveling companions for a welcome dinner hosted by your tour director. (D)


Day 3: Madrid

Morning sightseeing takes you to the Puerta del Sol, Plaza España with its monument to Cervantes, the Parliament, Cibeles Fountain, elegant Calle Alcala, and Paseo de Castellana. Then the highlight: a visit to the palatial PRADO MUSEUM with its priceless art treasures. The afternoon is at leisure. If you want to go further afield, join an optional excursion to El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen. (BB)


Day 4: Madrid. Excursion to Toledo

Via Castilian landscapes, this morning's focus is on splendid Toledo. Spectacularly situated on a granite hill surrounded by a loop of the Tagus River, the ancient Castilian capital attracts more sightseers from all over the world than any other Spanish town. An expert takes you to the Moorish bridge, an early SYNAGOGUE, the 13th-century GOTHIC CATHEDRAL, and the church of SANTO TOMA with one of El Greco's most famous paintings. Then visit a Damascene steel workshop before returning to Madrid. The rest of the afternoon is free for independent activities. (BB)


Day 5: Madrid at Leisure

Discover what this wonderful metropolis has to offer. Visit its fine museums, the Royal Palace, the Old Town with Plaza Mayor, or simply stroll through the magnificent botanical gardens. You'll never run out of things to do and see. After dark check out the typical local scene; ask your tour director for suggestions and reservations. (BB)


Day 6: Madrid, Excursion to Seville

Board the exciting AVE high-speed train that whisks you to Seville in just over two hours. On arrival your local expert explains the city's role in Roman times, its conquest by the Moors in 712, and its contribution to the discovery of the New World. Admire MARIA LUISA PARK. Drive to the Plaza de España, the Gold Tower on the Guadalquivir River, and the fine baroque building that is now the university but used to be the tobacco factory of Carmen fame. Visit the CATHEDRAL, the world's largest Gothic edifice, with Columbus' tomb. Finally stroll through the narrow lanes of the charming Santa Cruz quarter. Later return to Madrid. (BB)


Day 7: Madrid at Leisure

Explore Madrilenian art galleries, browse through the traditional shops, or catch up on your postcards. Tonight perhaps an optional dinner outing to celebrate the success of your exciting vacation. (BB)


Day 8: Departure Home or Barcelona Extension

Your homebound flight arrives the same day. (BB)

Day 9: At Leisure in Barcelona

For a real taste of the atmosphere of Catalunya's capital, stroll along Rambla Street and Passeig de Gràcia, the most representative avenues, and explore the small streets in the Gothic Quarter, where the famous Cathedral is located. Don't miss a visit to the marvelous Sagrada Familia Church. (BB)


Day 10: At Leisure in Barcelona

Another day to enjoy what this extraordinary city has to offer: visit the famous Olympic Stadium, the Art Museum of Catalunya, Picasso Museum, or the impressive Güell Park. You'll never run out of things to do and see. (BB)
