For centuries India and the East comprised a voyage of dreams, a journey
so exclusively the province of the privileged that it was the sea trip
on which the word "posh" was born. The Indian Ocean's ports
were long the exotic domain of privateers and plantation owners, of
adventuring Portuguese sailors and Arab traders. Then, as word spread of
swirling silk saris and gold-domed minarets, of jade Buddhas and Ceylon
tea, a sea journey to these exotic lands became a rite of passage into
high society.
