Day 1: Salt Lake City
Welcome to Salt Lake City! Meet your traveling companions at the 6:30 p.m. welcome dinner hosted by your tour director.
Day 2: Salt Lake
City, Jackson
Morning sightseeing focuses on the city's many historic monuments, including Temple Square, the State Capitol, and the University of Utah--site of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Then drive along the shores of Great Salt Lake, continuing through the southern tip of Idaho, with a brief photo stop at Bear Lake. Proceed northward into Wyoming, reaching the all-western town of Jackson. Evening is at leisure to stroll along the downtown boardwalks and enjoy a drink in one of the swing-door saloons.
Day 3: Jackson, Jackson Hole Aerial
Tram
Depart for the alpine village of Teton, where you'll board an aerial tram that will carry you to the summit of 10,450-foot Rendezvous Mountain. From the top, enjoy a spectacular panorama of the Teton Range and the Jackson Hole Valley. The afternoon is at leisure in Jackson. You may find horseback riding or renting a bike appealing. Or just explore the array of shops and museums in the historic downtown area. Note: Jackson Hole Aerial Tram operates from late May until the third week of September. Tours arriving in Jackson before or after these dates will instead enjoy a guided tour of the world-renowned National Museum of Wildlife Art. The operation of the tram is always subject to favorable weather conditions.
Day 4: Grand Teton National
Park, Yellowstone National Park
Morning is free in Jackson. Maybe join the exciting optional raft trip on the Snake River. Float in a comfortable raft beneath the towering peaks of the Grand Tetons. Watch for wildlife as your experienced local guide gives an informative narration. Then head north through
Grand Teton National Park and on to Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872 as the world's first national park. Admire famous Old Faithful geyser that has been erupting consistently for over 100 years.
Day 5: Mammoth Hot Springs and Yellowstone
Lake
A scenic drive through the park with a stop along the way at Fountain Paint Pots to see the bubbling mud. At Mammoth Hot Springs take short trail walk through the steaming limestone terraces. Rejoin the loop road and enjoy several photo stops along the way, with the best perhaps at Artist Point. Marvel at a spectacle of colorful canyon walls and an excellent view of the Yellowstone River's Lower Falls. Overnight in the Lake Yellowstone area.
Day 6:
Yellowstone, Cody
Near the east exit of the park, watch for elk, moose, antelope, and even buffalo--all abundant in this area. Leave Yellowstone and, by mid-afternoon, arrive in Cody, named after dashing Buffalo Bill Cody. This afternoon visit the
Buffalo Bill Historical Center, a fine museum of historic weapons and western art.
Day 7: Cody,
Little Bighorn Battlefield, Sheridan
This morning head for Little Bighorn Battlefield, the site commemorating one of America's most famous battles. Tour the battlegrounds where General Custer was defeated by the Sioux, and visit the museum. Then head to the cattle town of Sheridan, which sits at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains.
Day 8: Sheridan,
Devils Tower, Deadwood, Rapid City
This morning visit Devils Tower National Monument, then continue through the Black Hills to Deadwood, once a wild gold-mining town. Sightseeing with your local guide includes nearby
Mount Moriah Cemetery on Boot Hill, where Wild Bill lies buried alongside Calamity Jane.
Day 9: Rapid City,
Mount Rushmore
The day begins with a visit to the Borglum Historical Center. Hear the account of the creation of the
Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which features the monumental heads of four U.S. presidents--Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt carved on the face of a mountain. Next visit the
Crazy Horse Memorial in honor of the fearless Sioux Indian chief whose fame is derived from the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Tonight your tour director hosts a festive farewell
dinner.
