Day 1: Depart USA
Overnight flight to Europe.
Day 2: Arrive in Switzerland
Transfer to your hotel in Geneva with the remainder of the
day free.
Day 3: Geneva
This morning we visit the much photographed Chillon Castle,
the 12th-century water fortress near Montreaux. We continue
our tour along the upper ridge of placid Lake Leman (Lake
Geneva). There will be stops along the way to freshen up and
take in this extraordinarily beautiful site. Finally you
will come to the south end of this magnificent lake and
encounter the historic city known to Protestants as the
"Town of Calvin" - Geneva. We begin sightseeing at St.
Peter's Cathedral, where John Calvin taught the doctrine
that made him famous throughout the Protestant faith. Other
Reformation sites of interest include Calvin's Academy, the
Reformation Monument and the Reformation Museum. We'll also
take a walk by the Flower Clock and Gardens before returning
to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Zermatt
This morning transfer via bus and then mountain train to
Zermatt, which lies at the base of the mighty Matterhorn.
The mountain village of Zermatt is one of the great ski and
climbing centers of the world. Nestled in a deep valley
enclosed between steeply scarped mountains, it is dominated
by the huge and gracefully curved pyramid of the Matterhorn.
From the moment you catch sight of the cobbled streets and horse drawn carriages pulling their patrons (this is an automobile free village), you know you are in a special place.
Day 5: Glacier Express
Board the Glacier Express train this morning and you will be
able to see all the sights of the Swiss Alps through the
large glass windows. This 7.5 hour ride will cross 291
bridges, go through 91 tunnels, and up and down many steep
grades. Arrive in the resort town of St. Moritz late this
afternoon.
Day 6: St. Moritz-Innsbruck
Leave St. Moritz and stop to visit Zugspitze (the highest
mountain in Germany) and take a ride to the top on the
famous cable car. Arrive in Innsbruck late this afternoon.
Day 7: Innsbruck Walking Tour, Neuschwanstein, Oberammergau
A walking tour today will include the Triumphal Arch
commemorating the wedding of the Duke of Tuscany, Saint
Anna’s Column and Swarovski Kristallwelten, a wonderland of
crystal works of art by artists past and present. This
afternoon we stop at the Rococo-style chapel in the Meadow
and Ludwig II’s most luxurious former residence, the
Neuschwanstein Castle. We continue to the charming town of
Oberammergau, site of our Passion Play tomorrow.
Day 8: Oberammergau Performance
Your morning is free to enjoy the delightful village of
Oberammergau with outstanding opportunities for photos and
shopping. Lunch is provided by the Oberammergau Committee.
This afternoon and evening we enjoy the Passion Play
production. The play depicts the story of Christ's Passion,
beginning with the entry into Jerusalem and ending with the
resurrection and transfiguration, a moving and spectacular
experience. Each performance starts at 2:30 pm and ends
approximately 10:30 pm, with a three-hour dinner
break/intermission from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.
Day 9: Salzburg
Our destination today is Salzburg, the Baroque city
forever associated with both Mozart and the “Sound of
Music.” A jewel in a perfect mountain setting on both banks
of the Salzach River, the city and the surrounding
countryside are dominated by the magnificent Festung
Hohensalzburg, a 12th century fortress 500 feet above the
town. We visit the birthplace of Mozart, now a museum; also
the 17th century Residenzplatz, with its 40-foot high
fountain; and the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter. The
remainder of the day is free with many things to do and see
such as attending a musical performance.
Day 10: Vienna
Travel from Salzburg to Vienna and begin our sightseeing
with a visit to Hofburg Palace, residence of the Hapsburgs
and home of the famous Spanish Riding School. We attend a
morning training session of the beautiful and famous white
Lippizaner horses. We then continue to Schonbrunn Palace to
see the apartments occupied by emperor Franz -Josef. This
afternoon we continue by viewing some of the most important
sights of Vienna via a panoramic motorcoach tour: the
Hofburg, former Imperial winter residence and scene of the
Vienna Congress; the Ringstrasse, with its magnificent
buildings such as the Opera House, National Museums,
Parliament, the Burgtheater, the University and the Votive
Church; St. Charles' Church, Vienna's most beautiful Baroque
church; the Musikverein, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The
last stop of the day is to the Vienna Art Museum. We return
to our hotel where you are free to explore at your leisure.
Day 11: Departure
We transfer to the airport for our flight home.
