Departure
Overnight flight to Paris!
Day 2: May 15, Arrive Paris, City Tour
Arrive in Paris with a brief tour of the city, including one
of the main Jewish areas (Le Marais). (D)
Day 3: May 16, Worship Service, Jewish
Quarter, Concentration Camp
Morning services at the Central Baptist Church in Paris.
Afternoon visit to the Jewish quarter (St. Paul), the Great
Synagogue of Paris, the France-Israel cultural center and Drancy,
the French concentration camp on the North side of Paris from
which 70,000 Jewish people were deported to the death camps in
Eastern Europe.
Evening: Testimony service with Pastor Philippe Pluchon, our
IBJM representative in Paris; he will report on the Jewish
ministry through his church in Paris. (B)
Day 4: May 17, Medieval Museum, Notre
Dame & Chateaux Fontainebleau
Visit the medieval museum in the Latin Quarter (Musée de
Cluny) and then the Ile de la Cité where Paris was born prior to
Roman times. Stop at the Sainte-Chapelle, and Notre Dame de
Paris. Afternoon trip to the Royal (Renaissance) Château of
Fontainebleau, where Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes
(1685) heralding more than a century of persecution of believers
in France. (B, D)
Day 5: May 18, Walking Tour & Paris
Churches, Louve
Morning Reformation walking tour of Central Paris: learn
about Jacques LeFevre-Etaples and his translation of the
scriptures; visit the remains of his Abbey of St. Germain des
Prés, then on to the memorial to Henry IV, the only protestant
French king, whose mother was a fervent Christian. We will move
on to the Right Bank to see the Oratoire Church where a 19th
century revival broke out under the preaching of Adolphe Monod,
and we will see the square where the St. Bartholomew Day
Massacre of believers began in 1573. After lunch, an afternoon
visit to the grounds of the Louvre. (B, D)
Day 6: May 19, Marseille
Early morning fast train (TGV) to the South of France, where
we will meet up with our IBJM missionary in Marseille, Didier
Silberstein. There will be an afternoon visit to Arles, an old
Roman city. If the Apostle Paul ever did travel west, he may
well have stopped in some of these French coastal towns. (B, D)
Day 7: May 20, Huguenot History
Morning travel to Anduze (Mas-Soubeyran) to visit the
Huguenot museum, the Museum of the Desert, located in the
ancestral home of one of their leaders. Then on to the restored
medieval city of Carcassonne where we will have dinner (a
regional specialty called Cassoulet) in the old city. (B, D)
Day 8: May 21, Museum of Inquisition
Visit the old city of Carcassonne, with a guided tour of the
Château and city walls. Visit a museum of the Inquisition, as
the city is located in the heart of an area where various groups
of believers as well as certain sects were persecuted by the
Roman Catholic Inquisition. Visit the Cathar village of Minerve
on the return trip to Marseille. (B, D)
Day 9: May 22, Aix-en-Provence
Morning visit to Aigues-Mortes, where the Tower of Constance
is located, the famous prison for Huguenot women (Marie Durand
was its most famous prisoner). Afternoon visit to
Aix-en-Provence, a charming Mediterranean town. (B, D)
Day 10: May 23, Worship Service, City
Tour
Morning bus ride to worship with the Bible Baptist Church at
Marseille. Afternoon tour of the city, including the historic
Great Synagogue; we will perhaps join Brother Silberstein for a
literature distribution in one of the Jewish quarters.
Evening: We will have a concluding testimony service and Brother
Silberstein will present the Jewish ministry in Marseille. (B)
Day 11: May 24, Homeward
Transfer to the Marseille airport for the return trip to the
USA, as the group says Au revoir to the Lawrences and to France.
