Elders to be Held in a Position of Respect
Instinctive survival of the family. In the same vein, the natural order is for the younger to look to the elder for support in these areas. The history of man coupled with the natural order of creation has always elevated the Patriarch and Matriarch position. Grandparents need to take advantage of these natural benefits of elevated position by passing on important truths and using our influence to regularly remind our family about what our treasure truly is.
The Family Patriarch/Matriarch historically was responsible for the entire family. This is clearly seen in the lives of Job, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, etc. Married children and grown men and women were to honor and follow the wisdom and authority of the elder.
Leviticus 19:32 You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.
I Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
Job 32:4,6 Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were older than he. And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said: “I am young in years, and you are aged; therefore I was timid and afraid to declare my opinion to you. When an elder is found in sin, he/she is to be treated respectfully.
I Tim 5:1 Don't rebuke an elder, but exhort him as a father. Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father.
Prov 23:22 Listen to your father who begot you, And don't despise your mother when she is old.
Deuteronomy 21:19 His father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. There are many other biblical examples of the elders place of authority and position of wisdom and judgment. Grandparent/elder responsibility and authority diminished. We see the lack of respect and honor of the elderly diminishing daily, undermined by our culture (movies, TV, psychiatry, government). Nonetheless it remains a biblical principle. A society in decline, punishment for sin against God.
Lam 5:12 Princes were hanged up by their hand: The faces of elders were not honored.
