Your time in Madrid is the perfect balance of guided sightseeing and time to explore on your own. Spend time at the Prado Museum, the Royal Palace, the Plaza Espaa and more. You'll also enjoy an included excursion to the town of Toledo to see the Gothic Cathedral and the church of Santo Tome, home of one of El Greco's most famous paintings. A special highlight is boarding the exciting AVE high-speed train to Seville to explore the sights and architecture of this former Roman city. You can add three days in Barcelona to this vacation.

Day 4: Madrid. Excursion to Toledo
Via Castilian landscapes, this morning’s focus is on splendid Toledo. Spectacularly situated on a granite hill surrounded by a loop of the Tagus River, the ancient Castilian capital attracts more sightseers from all over the world than any other Spanish town. An expert takes you to the Moorish bridge, an early SYNAGOGUE, the 13th-century GOTHIC CATHEDRAL, and the church of SANTO TOMÈ with one of El Greco’s most famous paintings. Then visit a Damascene steel workshop before returning to Madrid. The rest of the afternoon is free for independent activities. (BB)

On arrival your local expert explains the city’s role in Roman times, its conquest by the Moors in 712, and its contribution to the discovery of the New World. Admire MARIA LUISA PARK. Drive to the Plaza de España, the Gold Tower on the Guadalquivir River, and the fine baroque building that is now the university but used to be the tobacco factory of Carmen fame. Visit the CATHEDRAL, the world’s largest Gothic edifice, with Columbus’ tomb. Finally stroll through the narrow lanes of the charming Santa Cruz quarter. Later return to Madrid. (BB)
