Conoscere L'Italia Del Sud
Day 1: Rome
Arrival and free time
Day 2: Rome
Our first stop is Castel Gandolfo, the papal summer residence. After a
short tour, we head for Tivoli and the Hadrian's villa, and then the
Villa d'Este, famous for its intricate fountain system. We then depart
for Naples. En route we will visit the Abbey of Monte Cassino, made
famous as a turning point of World War II.
Day 3: Naples
Rich with history, architecture, archaeological treasures, and food, we
will have a "taste" of each in this often chaotic, but fun and
lively, city in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. The architecture and often
narrow streets are worth a look alone. But one of the best musems in
Italy, the National Archaeological Musem, resides here, and we will
visit it in the morning. Afterward we head for SOLFATARA, the actual
inside of an active volcano, where you can smell the sulphur air and
turn a rock over to expose burning hot ground underneath. It is said
Solfatara inspired Dante's "Inferno."
Finally, we will visit a cameo factory, where you can purchase very
unusual and beautiful crafts.
Day 4: Pompeii;
Herculaneum
The fantastic and ancient ruins uncovered from beneath volcanic ash,
stone and mud evoke thoughts about life and death and how tenuous it all
is. Buried just 6 years after the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, you
can see cement casts of people as they were when they were buried,
sometimes shielding themselves from the horror. Time permitting, we may
also climb to the mouth of Mount Vesuvius. Time permitting, we will also
visit a cameo factory.
Day 5: Pozzuoli/Paestum/The
Amalei Drive; Positano; Sorrento
Pozzuoli, with its partially submerged ancient marketplace, is mentioned
in the Bible (Puteoli). We will make a short stop there, then visit
Paestum, with its Greek temple of Poseidon, and other Greek
architecture.
Then it's time for a relaxing ride down one of the most beautiful
coast-hugging, cliff-hanging roads in the world, along with visits to a
colorful town, Positano, along the way. We will overnight in Sorrento,
the town of inlaid wood crafts.
Day 6: Capri
Another relaxing day awaits as we sail for the island of the Blue
Grotto. We will take a boat ride into the famous cavern, then ride the
funicular to the top of the island for a spectacular view. Return to our
hotel in Sorrento.
