A Brief History
Stretching from St. Tropez to the Italian border, the Riviera has been
known for decades as the playground of European's wealthy. However,
surrounding the crowded beach scene are small villages and resort towns
with a history and character all their own. Plan to take an excursion
outside of the over-developed resort to explore the slopes above the sea
dotted with olive trees.

Itinerary
Days 1-2: Nice
Make Nice your home base in the Riviera, taking two days explore the
many museums, cathedrals and other cultural offerings before heading out
to the beaches. The Old Town (known as Vieux Nice) is the best place to
get a taste of the history of the city with a visit to the Castle Hill
chateau. The meandering streets of the district are lined with colorful
markets and restaurants. The 17th century Ste. Reparate Cathedral houses
magnificent stained glass windows and a huge organ (which is still in
working order). As in many other areas of France, Nice boasts its own
Roman ruins, a Roman arena, Arenes de Cimiez. There are museums for
every taste and interest, from art to archaeology. Two museums bear the
names of well known artists, Chagall and Matisse.
Day 3: St. Raphael
The simple town of St. Raphael is situated between high, rocky cliffs.
Besides its white sandy beaches and marinas, the town has a great public
transportation system reaching out to the surrounding areas. Pack a
picnic lunch, hop in the car and treat yourself to a peaceful day.
Day 4: St. Tropez
St. Tropez is a ritzy town, accessible from St. Raphael, where you can
catch a scenic, 1 1/2 hour bus ride or a shorter boat ride. Most of the
beaches in St. Tropez are private, however those wishing to catch a
glimpse of a movie star or two may find themselves in the right place at
the right time at Plage de Tahiti. The best way to see this famous
French vacation spot is by renting a Moped.
Day 5: Cannes
Since the 1800's, Cannes has been attracting the glamorous set from all
over the world, especially during its International Film Festival.
Although prices are usually high in Cannes, you can enjoy crepes and
sandwiches at any of the beach front concessions. Beach lovers can
choose from a variety of public and private beaches (which charge
admission fees).
Day 6: Monaco
The nearby, tiny principality of Monaco is home to 30,000 millionaire
citizens and the late Princess Grace. The old town of Monaco-Ville is
situated on a rocky headland stretching out to the sea. In Monte Carlo
is a wonderful treasure of the city, the Oceanography Museum founded by
Prince Albert I in 1910. The museum features a delightful aquarium (with
over 3,000 species of marine life) and displays of the Prince's findings
during his deep sea adventures. You can visit the tombs of the former
Princes of Monaco and Princess Grace Kelly at the Cathedral of
Monaco-Ville.
