8 Days

Lima, Cuzco, and Machu Picchu

Days 1-2: Lima Cathedral, San Francisco Monastery, Casa Aliaga
A daytime flight to Lima. On arrival check in to your hotel. On day two, your included city tour focuses on Lima’s rich colonial history as well as the modern city. Lima was the bastion of Spanish South America from its founding in 1535 until the independence of the South American republics in the early 19th century. Visits include the CATHEDRAL, where the skeleton of Francisco Pizarro is sealed in a wooden coffin; the SAN FRANCISCO MONASTERY with its eerie burial crypts; and Casa Aliaga, a 16th-century mansion that has been continually inhabited by the same family for almost five centuries and boasts a priceless collection of Spanish colonial paintings. The balance of the day is free. (B)

Your Hotel is the Swissotel Lima: an elegant and modern building offering all the comforts a discerning guest expects in a home away from home.

Days 3-4: Cuzco, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Urubamba Valley
Excursion to Pisac and Ollantaytambo. An early morning flight to Cuzco, nestled high in the Andes. This afternoon’s city tour visits the SANTO DOMINGO MONASTERY, built on the foundations of the Inca Temple of the Sun, the CATHEDRAL and the nearby FORTRESS OF SACSAYHUAMAN. On day four, a short drive into the Urubamba Valley leads to the market town of Pisac. Handmade rugs, alpaca sweaters, and jewelry can be bought here at bargain prices. At the other end of the valley is Ollantaytambo. Here some of the finest examples of Inca masonry can be seen. Return to Cuzco and maybe sample local cuisine at one of the numerous restaurants this evening. (B daily, L day 4)

Your Hotel is the Hotel Libertador Cusco: originally built by Inca laborers for Peru’s conqueror, Francisco Pizzaro, and opposite the Temple of the Sun.

Days 5-6 Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, Cuzco
Board the autorail car bound for Machu Picchu and cut a path through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Spend the rest of the day exploring this intact fortress with its temple remains, holy houses and mile-long aqueduct. For the hikers, a brisk one-hour walk leads to the Sun Gate, the ancient entrance used by the Incas. A highlight the next morning–be sure to wake early and watch the sun rise over Machu Picchu. Spend the morning hiking Huayna Picchu or simply relax in the hotel. In the afternoon of day six return to Cuzco. Still time to enjoy the culture and history of this city. Maybe visit the Inca Museum or wander through the artisan district of San Blas. (B daily, L day 5)

Your Hotel is the Machu Picchu Peublo Hotel: tile-roofed casitas amid tropical vegetation in the beautiful Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

Day 7-8: Lima, Plaza De Armas, Gold Museum, Miraflores
Fly back to Lima this morning. Hotel rooms are available upon arrival until departure for the airport this evening. Spend the day relaxing, shopping or taking in some last-minute sightseeing. Founded in 1535, the "City of Kings" was once the capital of the Spanish South American Empire so there is history on almost every corner. Explore the vast Plaza de Armas to view first hand Lima’s colonial heritage. Visit the opulent Gold Museum with its magnificent collection of gold and fascinating artifacts from around the world, including a child’s poncho made entirely of yellow feathers and a skull with a full set of pink quartz teeth. Or stroll along the fashionable boulevards of Miraflores and relax in one of its many sidewalk cafes. Arrive in the US early in the morning on day eight to connect with hometown flights. (B)

Your Hotel is Swissotel Lima: near the commercial center, with a private collection of gold pieces and jewels from pre-Hispanic Peruvian cultures.
