The Best of Israel -
5 Star |
Available
Year-round
Monday, Day 1: Flight - New York to Tel Aviv
We depart from New
York on an overnight transatlantic flight to Israel. Meals and movies on
board.
Tuesday, Day 2: Jaffa, Tel Aviv
We arrive at the
new and magnificent Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv. We are greeted by
our guide and driver. We begin our sightseeing with a walking tour of
ancient Jaffa. In Tel Aviv we visit Independence Hall, where we will
relive the moment when the downward spiral of Jewish history did a
180-degree turn upwards -- David Ben Gurion's moving Declaration of the
State. We drive to our hotel in Tel Aviv on the Mediterranean Coast for
welcome reception, check-in and dinner. Our lodging this evening will
be in Tel Aviv.
Wednesday, Day 3: Tel Aviv, Caesarea, Galilee
We visit the new
Palmach Museum, where the period before statehood stirringly comes
alive. It was the time of heroes and the stories of legends. Next is a
visit to the memorial center and the battle field of the brave residents
of Kibbutz Nitzanim and the soldiers of the battalion 53, of the Givati
Brigade in the War of Independence. We will drive north along the Plain
of Sharon, the Mediterranean and the old coastal road - the Via Maris
which linked Egypt and Babylon to Caesarea and the ancient Roman
theatre, built by Herod. We will also visit Shuni. Mentioned in the
Jerusalem Talmud as the location of a Jewish village named Shuni, in
modern times it served as the staging area for the activities of the
Irgun, a paramilitary organization that broke away from the Haganah to
pursue its own course toward statehood. You will take a walk in a water
conduit, which will chill your body from the Israeli summer. In ancient
days, this water conduit took the spring water to Caesarea where the
residents of Caesarea and the vicinity used to gather for the ‘water
celebrations.' Then it's on to the port of Atlit, an ancient fishing
village that served as an illegal immigrant detention center in
pre-state days. We continue along the Galilee area to meet new friends
at our Kibbutz Guesthouse where we will spend the next two nights. Enjoy
Kibbutz hospitality with dinner, a memory to take home. Our lodging for
the next two evenings will be in Galilee.
Thursday, Day 4: Golan Heights, Safed
After a Kibbutz
style breakfast, we will enjoy a different day from all the rest! Today
we are set out for an adventure: we will take a Jeep ride to the Golan
region. Here we will learn about the Yom Kippur War in a way you can
never do through books and articles, and enjoy an in-depth tour of the
Golan. Visits in the Golan will include the area's capital, the town of
Katzrin. We will visit Banias Springs, where we will swim and enjoy a
hike along Banias. It is considered to be the largest spring feeding
from Mt. Hermon and leading into the Jordan River. We will travel
further north to visit the mystical city of Safed. We will stroll along
the narrow tangle of cobblestone streets, home to Cabbalists and
thriving artist colony. Visit the ancient Synagogues and walk along the
artist's colony. We will stop at Bat Yaar for a wonderful BBQ (Mangal).
After dinner, we will see a presentation of the Hagadah and finish off a
sensational day with a rollicking night of Israeli Folk dancing, known
as the Hora, "an unbelievable experience". We return to our Kibbutz for
overnight in the Galilee.
Friday,
Day 5: Beth Shean & Dead
Sea
A relaxing cruise on the Sea of Galilee with easy viewing of the nearby
Golan Heights brings to life the experiences of the fishermen
disciples. From here we travel southward to visit the
Jordan River Baptismal site,
and then to
Beit-Shean/Scythopolis, the
most magnificent archeological site in Israel, located at the strategic
juncture of the Jezreel and Jordan valleys. Like Jericho, it has been
almost continuously occupied throughout history. After defeating Saul
and his sons on Mt. Gilboa, the Philistines hanged their bodies on the
walls of Beit-Shean. (1 Sam 31:10-12) During the intertestamental
period, the city was renamed the "Scythopolis". Archaeologists have
uncovered a huge number of ruins of the Roman/Byzantine Scythopolis. As
we travel along we will view the oldest city in the world - Jericho,
before coming to our lodging for the evening at the Dead Sea. Spend time
in the special spa and enjoy a dip in the Dead Sea for a relaxing float
before dinner.
Saturday, Day 6: Masada,
Dead Sea Scrolls, Ein Gedi
Our day begins with a cable car ride to the mountain top fortress of
Masada. Here our guide will treat us to the history of the famous zealot
stand. We'll visit
Qumran Caves, where the Dead
Sea Scrolls were discovered. Afterwards we proceed to
Ein Gedi, "Spring of the
Goat," an oasis on the western shore of the Dead Sea. Because of its
warm climate and abundant supply of water, the site developed a
reputation for its fragrant plants and date palm groves. This is where
King David hid from Saul, and where God defeated the enemies of the
Israelites by praise and worship led by King Jehoshaphat. (1 Sam 23:29;
24 Song of Songs 1:14). Our lodging for the next four nights will be in
Jerusalem.
Sunday, Day 7: New Jerusalem & Judea
After breakfast at
hotel, we will drive around the New City of Jerusalem and its
surroundings. Our first stop will be Yad Vashem, Memorial for the
Holocaust. We will also visit the Valley of the Communities and the
Children's Pavillion. We continue to Har Herzl, where Israel's bravest
are laid to rest (time to reflect and pay our respects). We continue on
to Ammunition Hill, sight of one of the fiercest battles for Jerusalem,
which took place during the Six Day War. To conclude our day, we will
take a walking tour of 19th century Jerusalem. It will include Nachlat
Shiva, the Russian Compound, Safra Square and City Hall.
Monday, Day 8: Old City
After breakfast at
hotel, we will enter the Old City and go to the Southern Wall
Excavations. Here we will also visit the Davidson Center, one of the
most significant ecological sites in the country. We proceed to the
Burnt House, the excavated basement workshop of a home. Continue through
the Cardo, a wide Roman thoroughfare flanked by columns that have been
restored to its former glory and now house elite boutiques along the
Jewish quarter. We begin at the passageways descending through the many
layers of Jerusalem's past at the time of the Temple through the Western
Wall Tunnels. We will return to our hotel for the remainder of the day
at leisure.
Tuesday, Day 9: 19th Century Jerusalem and Free

This morning we
will take a walking tour of 19th century Jerusalem. It will include
Nachlat Shiva, the Russian Compound, Safra Square and City Hall. This
