January 3: Depart USA for Rome
We depart this afternoon to begin our exciting journey to Rome.

January 4: Arrival in Rome
Upon our arrival in Rome, a Pilgrim Tours representative will meet our group and assist in our transfer to the President Hotel. We will have the remainder of the day free for our leisure until we meet for a special welcome dinner this evening.

January 5: Rome Touring
After breakfast we will enjoy a full day tour of Rome. Our tour will include a guided visit to the Vatican Museum including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica which includes the grave of the late Pope John Paul II. This afternoon we will enjoy a guided tour of the Coliseum and visit to the archeological area of the Roman Forum.

January 6: Free Day or Excursion to Pompeii ($110)
After breakfast you will be free to explore Rome on your own or take an excursion to Pompeii. Upon our arrival we will enjoy a guided tour of Pompeii as we explore the famous excavations. We will return to Rome this evening.


January 7: Free Day
or Optional Rome Tour ($90),
Optional Evening Dinner Opera ($90)
After breakfast you will be free to explore Rome or you may choose a full day tour of this famous city. For those who choose the full day tour, your day will include a guided tour of the San Callisto Catacombs along with a visit to both Trevi Fountain and the Piazza Di Spagna. Our day tour of Rome will conclude with a visit to the Pantheon. We will return to our hotel for the remainder of the day at leisure. Take advantage of a special dinner opera this evening at the Tanagra Restaurant. The Tanagra Restaurant is located in the center of Rome, in an elegant and delightful setting on the banks of the river Tiber (only a few minutes from Vatican City). We will have the opportunity to taste Italian traditional cooking, while listening to some of the most famous opera arias interpreted by Tanagra’s professional singers from the Rome Opera House.

January 8: Free Day or Excursion to Assisi ($100)
After breakfast you will be free to again explore Rome on your own or take an excursion to Assisi. Upon our arrival in Assisi, we will have time for lunch on our own.  After lunch we will enjoy a two hour guided tour of the city to include the San Francesco Basilica, Santa Chiara Church and Santa Maria Degli Angeli Church. We will return to Rome for our overnight.

January 9: Free Day or Excursion to Borghese Gallery ($65)
After breakfast you will be free to again explore Rome on your own or to take an excursion to see the Borghese Gallery. The gallery is home to some famous paintings, sculptures, and other artwork including Bernini.  The tour will conclude by lunch time and you will have the rest of the day to shop, explore the city, and enjoy all that Rome has to offer.  We will meet tonight for a farewell dinner.

January 10: Depart Rome for USA
After breakfast we transfer to the airport for our return flight to the USA.

 

Malta Extension:  January 10-14, 2009

 

January 10: Depart Rome for Malta
After breakfast we transfer to the airport for our flight to Malta.  We arrive at our Mediterranean paradise and our greeted by our tour host during the stay.  We begin with a brief tour en route to the hotel, then free time to explore on your own.

 

January 11: Blue Grotto, Limestone Heritage, and Marsaxlokk Market

Discover the Southern part of Malta. After having visited the fishing villages of Marsaxlokk and Birzebbugia we proceed to the fabled Blue Grotto where there will be the possibility of admiring the grottoes from close by.

 

January 12: Gozo Heritage

Tour to Malta's sister island of Gozo. After a twenty-minute crossing, on setting foot in Gozo you will notice that although both islands are similar in history and development Gozo has a character entirely of its own. Gozo, which is a three-hilled island, is greener and more picturesque than Malta. During this excursion, you shall visit the temples of Ggantija, the citadel in Victoria, the bay of Xlendi, and calypso's cave. Free time for shopping will also be given - Gozo is well known for its woolen goods and handmade lace.

 

January 13: Mdina Medieval Walled City and Valletta the Capital City of Malta

Today's excursion will take you to the central part of Malta that is dominated by the ancient citadel of Mdina. On passing through the narrow streets of Mdina, the 'silent city', you shall admire the cathedral and the imposing bastions that command a magnificent view of most of the island. On leaving Mdina through the 'Greek Gate' you shall stop by at the catacombs before proceeding to the cliffs at Dingli. You will then visit St. John's Co-Cathedral a place adorned in riches that date back to the times of the Knights of Malta. After this there will be a visit to the Grand Master's Palace, where you can see the staterooms.

 

January 14: Return Home

You will be transferred to the airport for a flight home and land back in the USA on the same day.
