Southern Spain Winter Getaway

8 Day Tour - January 5-12, 2007

Day 1:  Depart USA
We depart New York this afternoon for an overnight flight to beautiful southern Spain.  We will enjoy various meals and service while in flight.

Day 2:  Arrive in Malaga
We arrive in Malaga, known as the “City of the Mediterranean Sun”.  Malaga is famous for the great beaches of nearby Costa del Sol as well the birthplace of Picasso.  We will enjoy an orientation tour of Malaga en route to our first class hotel.  After checking into our hotel, we will have free time this afternoon to rest and explore Malaga on our own before meeting as a group for a special welcome dinner.

Day 3:  Malaga
After our hot buffet breakfast we will enjoy a morning tour of Malaga.  We will visit the Malaga Cathedral which is one of the four most important Cathedrals in Spain.  We continue our morning tour of Malaga to as we visit Old Town.  Old Town offers tiny streets leading to the market area.  Worth a visit for any tourist, the market hall with its impressive marble entrance displays some of what the city has to offer to include fresh fish, flowers, vegetables and seafood all sold by local vendors.  Our tour will end in Old Town where there are many choices of nice restaurants choose from for lunch.  Our afternoon and evening will be at leisure to explore on our own or visit the beach or visit the Picasso Museum and birthplace.

Day 4:  Free Day or Gibraltar Tour  $75.00 per person
Today will be free to explore on your own or take an optional tour of Gibraltar.  Throughout time Gibraltar has stood guard over the western Mediterranean, its unique position making it the focus of a continuous struggle for power. This spectacular rock monolith is situated at the southern tip of Spain overlooking the strait to Africa and is known as the Meeting Place of Continents.  We will enjoy a guided tour of Gibraltar to include the Moorish Castle and the Great Siege Tunnels which make up some of the 33 miles of passages found underneath the rock.

Day 5:  Free Day or Optional tour to Ronda and Mijas            $65.00 per person
Today will be a free day to enjoy the Costa del Sol or take part in an optional excursion to Ronda and Mijas.  The town of Ronda is one of the most popular tourist destinations in southern Spain as it stands on a towering plateau and is divided in two by a plunging river gorge known as El Tajo.  Ronda is the home to modern bullfighting and it is here that we will enjoy a guided tour of the Spanish Bullfighting Museum.  We will also take time in Ronda to visit the Arab Baths which are considered one of the best preserved in Europe.   Our last stop on today’s excursion is the quaint typical Andalusian village of Mijas.  We will enjoy a walking tour of Mijas as we take time to view the beautiful coastal plains. Mijas is also known for its artisans who make baskets and plates with "esparto" and miniature figurines made out with matches.  We will return to Malaga for an evening at leisure.

Day 6:  Free Day or Optional Excursion to Seville                     $65.00 per person
After breakfast our day will be free or you can choose to take a full day optional tour to Seville.  For all its important monuments and fascinating history, Seville is universally famous for being a joyous town. While the Sevillians are known for their wit and sparkle, the city itself is striking for its vitality. It is the largest town in Southern Spain, the city of Carmen, Don Juan and Figaro.  In Seville our tour guide will walk us through the old city as we enjoy a guided entrance to the Cathedral and the Giralda tower.  We will also not want to miss the Santa Cruz quarter for time to explore the cramped streets, flowered balconies and richly decorated façade which all share the true character of this city.  We will return to Malaga this evening.

Day 7:  Free Day or Optional Excursion to Cordoba                 $65.00 per person
We enjoy our last day in Spain for some last minute sightseeing and shopping on our own or choose an optional full day tour to Cordoba.  An impressive and surprising Cordoba presents itself to today's visitors as impressive and surprising was its past. Not many know that in 11th century it was one of the most important capitals in Europe. People of the most different cultures and religions - Jews, Muslims and Christians - were living peacefully together, and important philosophers, scientists and artists emerged from here.  Knowing about Cordoba's cultural background you will certainly find interesting additional aspects when visiting its great monuments.  The highlight of Cordoba is the Mezquita which is the third largest Arabian Mosque in the world and described by some as the most beautiful and original building in all of Spain.  We will return to Malaga this evening and enjoy a special farewell dinner together.

Day 8:  Return to USA
This morning we say goodbye to beautiful southern Spain and transfer to the Malaga airport for our return flights to the USA.
