Day 1 Departure:
This
evening we take our international flight to Dakar, the capital of
Senegal.
Day 2 Dakar:
We
arrive in Dakar this morning. After our greeting from our guide we will
have time to settle in at our hotel. The remainder of the day can be
spent at leisure - relaxing, or enjoying this fascinating city.
Described as "a city of contrasts," Dakar has much to offer
tourists with its bustling streets, markets, colonial style villas,
medina, beaches, European and African cuisine, and much more!
Day 3 Dakar/Lac Rose/Saint
Louis:
We
begin the day with a delightful tour of the city of Dakar. We'll see the
colorful Sandaga, Tilene and Kermel markets, the great Mosque,
Independence Square, and the pompidou shopping centers avenue. Next we
visit the presidential palace, the cathedral, and finally the handicraft
village of Soubedione. We continue on to see Lac Rose this afternoon. A
rose-colored body of water surrounded by sand dunes and a baobab forest,
this lake is truly a magnificent sight. We travel to St. Louis where we
spend the evening.
Day 4 Djoudj:
We
leave St. Louis this morning for the Djoudj Park, an exceptional bird
reserve at the southern edge of the Sahara. Known as the third
Ornithological reserve of the world, this park is not only a gathering
place for millions of 250 different species of birds, but it is also
home to phacocheres, hyenas, gazelles, crocodiles and more! With over
40,000 acres of water stretches, Djoudj is truly a delightful oasis of
freshness and tranquility.
Day 5 Saint Louis/Saly:
This morning's travels take us to the quaint city of St. Louis, the
former capital of Senegal. Time seems to stand still as we travel the
narrow streets in a horse-drawn carriage and admire the fine houses
decked with carved wooden balconies and verandas. We travel on to the
beautiful resort area of Saly where we spend the evening. This green
park, extending more than 1,480 acres, has much to offer with its wide
range of attractions including exotic plants, swimming pools,
restaurants, fishing centers, horse stables, a deep sea fishing center,
shops, and miles of white sandy beaches.
Day 6 Saly/Ndangane(Saloum):
After
a morning enjoying the delights of Saly, we travel by bus to the small
village of N'dangane. Here a small river boat is waiting to take us to
various islands and villages in the delta region of Sine Saloum, a
renowned bird sanctuary and national park. These fascinating islands,
with their white sandy beaches yet extremely dense vegetation, are
filled not only with wild life, but also small villages of fishermen. We
return to Saly this evening where we spend the night.
Day 7 Saly/Goree:
This
morning a ferry boat takes us to Goree, remembered for being the
original slave island of the African East Coast. Although today a busy
little town with cafes, art galleries, and a beautiful beach, the
slaves' depots and forts preserved from centuries ago stand as memorials
of the island's terrible past. Throughout the tour we see the original
slave trading area and slave house, where millions of Africans were sold
in bondage and shipped to the Americas, as well as several other
fascinating museums and historical buildings.
