Malta, located just off the coast of Sicily, is a favorite vacation spot for Europeans, especially the Brits. The people are English speaking and extremely hospitable. The island is a treasure chest of antiquities, picturesque villages and scenic landscapes - all at an exceptional value.

 

Performances can be scheduled at a number of places on the island.

Jan 4-  Depart USA
We depart this evening and enjoy an overnight flight to Malta.  Sit back, relax and enjoy the various services while in flight.

Jan 5-  Arrival in beautiful Malta
We arrive at our Mediterranean paradise and are greeted by our tour host. The remainder of your day is free.

Jan 6-  Mdina Medieval Walled City
After breakfast at our hotel we enjoy a tour to old capital of Malta -Mdina, which is located in the central part of the island. During your walk in the silent city, you will visit the Cathedral and the imposing bastions that will allow you to admire a panoramic view of most of the island.  Later on you will visit Rabat, where we stop for a short walk around the narrow winding roads leading to the area of St. Paul’s Grotto & Catacombs (you will have the opportunity to visit the Catacombs). Later you will be visiting a modern souvenir and crafts centre - the Empire Crafts. At this centre you will witness craftsmen working on the filigree and women working at the weave and lace.  Lunch in a restaurant in Mdina including 3 course meal.  Return to the Hotel.

Jan 7-  Free Day or Three Cities ˝ day tour ($55.00)
After breakfast our day will be free to enjoy Malta on your own or you may also choose to take part in a half day Three Cities tour.  Discover the historical area known as the three cities: Vittoriosa, Cospicua, & Senglea. A drive past Cospicua will bring you to Vittoriosa where you can walk through the various narrow streets shaded by many historic buildings and churches. From the old quay you shall take a typical harbor 'fregatina' for a tour of the famous harbor creeks. In Senglea you will be able to have a look from the beautiful 'vedette' placed in the center of the Grand Harbor.

Jan 8-  Free Day or Optional Gozo Island Tour  ($95.00)
We enjoy a free day or an optional tour to Malta’s sister island of Gozo.  After a twenty-minute crossing, we set foot on Gozo you and soon notice that although both islands are similar in history and development Gozo has a character entirely of its own.  Gozo, which is a three-hilled island, is greener and more picturesque than Malta.  During this excursion, you shall visit the Azure Window at Dwejra, the citadel in Victoria, the bay of Xlendi, and we also stop at a spectacular cultural experience were Gozo’s history throughout the centuries is brought back to life!  Free time for shopping will also be given – Gozo is well known for its woolen goods and handmade lace.

Jan 9-  Free Day or Optional Local Lifestyle and Southern Malta  ($85.00)
Explore one of Malta’s few unspoilt villages in the south of the island.  Together with our guide you will be led to a Maltese Pjazza along winding narrow streets where progress did not leave its mark.  Proceed to the Zurrieq valley where there will be the possibility to take a boat trip that will take you to admire the Blue Grotto renowned for its azure sea.  (Boat fee is not included – weather permitting)  Leaving “Wied iz-Zurrieq we tour past varied agricultural land and vineyards up to the idyllic fishing village of Marsaxlokk.  Admire the waterfront lined with luzzus painted in traditional colours that add colour to this serene bay once site of landings by both the Turkish and French troops during Malta’s heroic past.  Time will be given to browse around the well known local market held daily in this village.  After lunch we visit Tarxien Temples that are a group of three temples that due to their very good state of preservation provide plenty of evidence of the skill and artistic abilities of our forefathers.  Our day comes to an end when you will be guided through the cave of Ghar Dalam, one of the first habitats of these islands.

Jan 10-  Free Day or Optional Jeep Safari Tour  ($90.00)
This ever popular Jeep Safari has been planned to show you the most beautiful parts of our Islands which are rarely visited by tourists. We avoid all the usual tourist sites and concentrate on an action packed day full of scenic beauty and fun. Our professional Safari leader will guide you throughout the day via radio taking you to places that even most local people do not know exist. We serve a typical lunch where one may sample a large selection of local specialties and taste the local farmers' wine. The Jeep Safari is ideal for all age groups and it is a superb way of getting to know Malta and Gozo. There are only a limited number of places available every day and it is recommended that you book early during your holiday. Jeeps are Chauffer Driven. All jeeps are 4 wheel drive, fully insured including passengers liability and have radio contact with the Safari Leader. All passengers, including driver, also have insurance cover.  We return to our hotel this evening and enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant with time to share with each other the highlights of our time in Malta.

Jan 11-  Homeward
We depart Malta this morning for our return flight to by late afternoon.


Optional Rome Extension: 

January 11-14, 2009

Jan 11-  Arrival in Rome
Upon our arrival in Rome, a Pilgrim Tours representative will meet our group and assist in our transfer to our hotel.  We will enjoy an afternoon walking tour to include Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and Piazza de Spagna before we return to our hotel and enjoy our dinner and overnight.

Jan 12-  Rome Touring
After breakfast we will enjoy a full day tour of Rome. Our tour will include a guided visit to the Vatican Museum including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica which includes the grave of the late Pope John Paul II. This afternoon we enjoy
a visit to the underground San Callisto Catacombs.  The San Callisto Catacombs are the burial place of Rome's Christian community and 16 popes of the 3rd century.  We return to our hotel and enjoy a free evening to try a local Italian restaurant on our own.

Jan 13-  Rome Touring
A fascinating day awaits us as we begin our Rome tour this morning as we enjoy a guided tour of the Coliseum and visit to the archeological area of the Roman Forum.  This afternoon will be free for some last minute shopping or further sightseeing of Rome.  We will enjoy a nice dinner at a local Italian restaurant together with time to reflect and share the highlights of our time in Rome.

Jan 14-  Return to USA
We enjoy breakfast and a leisurely morning before we are transferred to the Rome airport for our mid afternoon flights back to the US.
