Day 5: Ephesus and Patmos
Docking in Turkey, we will tour
Ephesus, the city of the Bible and one of the largest restorations
still in progress with miles of ancient treasures. You may choose time
at the market area or the "Turkish Bazaar" for bargains of every nature.
This afternoon we visit the Isle of Patmos,
under statutory protection as a historic monument. See the fortified
monastery of St. John and the cave claimed to be where John received
the Revelation.
Day
6: Rhodes
The largest of our adventure islands,
Rhodes is rich in Roman and Greek
culture. Stroll down the Street of the Knights to the market area for
shopping and a wonderful Greek lunch. This afternoon, visit the
fort/museum established by the Knights of St. John or rent a moped to
take in the beautiful island landscape. You may enjoy an optional tour to
the ancient city of Lindos. Magnificently situated between two bays with
sandy beaches, an ancient acropolis and medieval castle, Lindos is
famous as a most striking and impressive city. Again we return to the
ship for dinner and evening entertainment.
Day 7:
Crete/Santorini
Arrive in
Heraklion, the capital
and main commercial port of Crete, offers an
optional tour to the ruins of the Palace of Knossos
and vestiges of the ancient Minoan civilization.
Sail on to Santorini,
perhaps the most breathtaking of all Greek islands.
The white-washed houses, the narrow streets, the
open-air cafes and boutiques of sparkling white
cling to steep cliffs, accessible by foot, cable-car
or mule.
Day
8: Corinth - Mycenae
This morning we leave Athens by motor coach and travel to the ancient
city of Corinth. The ruins of this important cultural center are
fascinating as we walk along the stone path that the Apostle Paul
walked. The engineering skill and intellect of these people are evident
in the water systems that still flow from ancient to modern day. See the
public "restroom" facilities and be sure to ask why frogs
were in residence there. After the visit to ancient Corinth we travel to
Mycenae where the remains of the ancient city date back to the Bronze
Age. We will have a lunch stop (on our own) today in Mycenae at a
wonderful restaurant where Jackie Kennedy Onassis enjoyed lunch. This
afternoon we see the famous Lionesse Gate, the Tomb of Agamennon in the
shape of a Beehive, and many other sites before returning to Athens for
the evening.
Day
9: Delphi
Today we disembark early at 700 AM so
that we have time to travel to lovely mountain
region of Delphi-the ancient sanctuary of Apollo.
Delphi
offers the most amazing views of the olive groves
of Amphissa, the Corinthian Gulf and the
Pelopennese mountains. We will then visit the
museum which houses the famous bronze Charioteer
and the statue of Antinoos. From there we will
guide you along the sacred way to the Athenian
treasury followed by a chance to visit the
unforgettable Temple of Apollo, where the masses
flocked to consult the oracle. This ancient site,
backed by the imposing Mount Parnassus, is
situated in one of the most beautiful natural
settings in Greece. We return to Athens for
one last evening.
Day 10: Homeward Bound
We
transfer to the airport for our flight back to the USA.
