10 Days Tourist Class
September 25 - October 4, 2008
Tour Hosts: Dr. David Burggraff & Dr.
Andy Counterman
Day 1:
Overnight flight
Depart on an overnight flight to Zurich.
Day 2:
Arrive Zurich
Zurich is divided (as are many European cities) into the
modern cosmopolitan district and the Auld Stadt (old
city). It was in
Zurich where the Reformed branch of
the Reformation got its start under the leadership of
Ulrich Zwingli beginning in 1520. Today you will see his
monument, the church where he was pastor (the
Grossmunster), and the Guild Hall and Museum in which
you will find artifacts and works of art associated with
the Reformation. Transfer to Lucerne (2 nights).
Day 3: Lake Lucerne
Enjoy a walking tour of historic
Lucerne displaying Medieval
heritage every step of the way. See the impressive city
walls, the famous covered wooden bridge, ornate
patrician houses lining cobbled streets, and
Thorwaldsen's masterful
Lion Monument. Your afternoon is free to visit
the museums, ornate churches and take a scenic lake
cruise if you should choose.
Day 4: Lucerne, Interlaken, Berne
Next
we travel on to
Interlaken, a Bernese Oberland resort beautifully
situated between two lakes and beneath the towering
Jungfrau. Free time will be allowed to
explore through the woodcarving shops of Brienz before
we continue on to Berne, Switzerland's historic capital city.
Berne is a wonderfully preserved
Medieval town and one of the earliest cantons to embrace
the Protestant Reformation due mainly to the influence
of Zwingli. Sightseeing with a local expert starts at
the popular BEAR PIT and then focuses on the monumental
Federal Palace and the beautifully preserved medieval
Old Town. Witness the hourly parade of painted
figures at the Clock Tower and take your pictures of
ornate, flower-adorned fountains. We travel to the
lake-side resort city of Lausanne for the evening. (1
night Lausanne)
Day 5: Chillon Castle,
Geneva
This morning we visit the
much photographed
Chillon Castle,
the 12th-century water fortress near Montreaux. We
continue our tour along the upper ridge of placid Lake
Leman (Lake Geneva).
There will be stops along the way to freshen up and take
in this extraordinarily beautiful site. Finally you will
come to the south end of this magnificent lake and
encounter the historic city known to Protestants as the
"Town of Calvin" -
Geneva.
We
begin sightseeing at St. Peter's Cathedral, where John
Calvin taught the doctrine that made him famous
throughout the Protestant faith. Other Reformation sites
of interest include Calvin's Academy, the
Reformation Monument and the
Reformation
Museum. We'll also take a
walk by the Flower Clock and Gardens before returning to
our hotel for dinner and overnight. (1 night Geneva)
Day 6: Caen
Today we have tickets for
the TVG high speed train
to Paris where
we board a motorcoach and transfer to Caen.
Although it was nearly reduced to rubble during World
War II, Caen still has its history in tact. The Abbaye aux Hommes was constructed by William
the Conqueror for atonement of his sins. (1 night in
Caen)
Day 7: Normandy Sights
This
morning, we depart to the D-Day landing beaches.
Entrance to the Peace Memorial is included. In Arromanches on the British 'Gold' Beach, we will see
remnants of the Churchill Mulberry Harbor. We will then
visit the Normandy American Military Cemetery. We then
continue to Pointe Du Hoc. It is here that the US Army
Rangers stormed cliffs with collapsible ladders and
grappling hooks to get onto Omaha Beach. Ste-Mere-Eglise,
site of the 82nd Airborne's inadvertent 'drop zone', is
next on our itinerary. We will see the church steeple
where Private John Steele (played by Red Buttons in the
film The Longest Day) got 'hung up.' The townsfolk keep
an effigy of him hanging there to this day! We will also
view the stained glass windows that pay tribute to the
American Liberator of Normandy. Afterwards, we continue
to Utah Beach to see the site of the 4th Infantry
Division's landing. Just behind the dunes, we can have a
last walk on the now-peaceful beach. Return to Paris (3
nights).
Day 8:
Versaille, Paris
This morning we
tour the Palace and Gardens of Versailles. This retreat of
French royalty offers sumptuous reception rooms, intriguing Hall
of Mirrors and famous fountains and formal gardens. An afternoon
of sightseeing in Paris is planned including a tour of Notre Dame Cathedral.
views of all the important sights and of course elevation to the
top of the
Eiffel Tower.
Day 9: Paris Free Time
Enjoy the
elegant areas of Place de la Concorde, Arche of Triumph,
Foch Avenue, Garnier Opera, St. Honore Street (home of
the President and famous fashion designers), Vendome
Plaza, the Louvre, or return to the Eiffel Tower- it's
entirely up to you!
Day 10: Home
Return flight to the US.
